e-Safety and Ethics
The general topic of internet safety was originally discussed at the January 2007 meeting of the Communications Commission. Members present discussed the alarming rate to which news involving abused children, sexual predators and other technological abuses were coming to light. In a unanimous vote, the Communications Commission, chaired by Reverend James Galbreath, decided to take up the charge of promoting a more proactive approach to dealing with these issues.
Shortly thereafter, Joseph Brehm authored a piece titled Techno-Kids: Are They Safe, which was featured in the The Reporter on July 11th, 2008. Further discussion ensued and a decision was made to draft a resolution for the 168th Annual Conference in June of 2007.
Joseph Brehm and Beth Galbreath co-authored the resolution, which was edited by the Communications Commission during the meetings leading up to the Annual Conference.
Resolution 700-20, Creation of a Task Force on e-Safety and Ethics, was adopted on the Consent Calendar in Plenary on June 10, 2007. Click here for the text of the Resolution.
The intention for the Task Force on e-Safety and Ethics was to investigate and recommend changes in Safe Sanctuary Training to include the technical aspects of operating the church.
